Gov't task force labels Yoon's martial law bid 'insurrection from above'
SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Yonhap) -- A government task force said Thursday former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law bid in 2024 was an "insurrection from above" that sought to mobilize multiple state agencies, unveiling the outcome of a two-month investigation into officials' suspected involvement.
The task force, launched in November to investigate military and public officials' involvement in the martial law attempt, made the announcement, saying it found that attempts were made to maintain martial law even after the National Assembly had voted to lift it.
"We have confirmed that the Dec. 3 martial law bid declaration was an 'insurrection from above' that had an execution plan to mobilize all government agencies," Yoon Chang-ryeol, chief of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, said in a press briefing.
According to the task force, instructions from the "highest level of authority" were issued not only to the military and police, but to various central government agencies, posing a serious threat to the constitutional order.
"We found that attempts were made to keep martial law in place even after the National Assembly voted to lift it at 1 a.m. on Dec. 4 and multiple actions to justify the declaration after it was lifted," Yoon said. "This shows there was a premeditated plan for the martial law devised by someone."
As follow-up measures, the government has requested disciplinary action for 89 cases, primarily involving high-ranking officials, issued 82 warnings or cautions, and referred 110 cases for investigation.
