Cheong Wa Dae says no change in stance of developing future-oriented ties with Japan
By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- Cheong Wa Dae said Tuesday that there is no change in South Korea's stance of developing future-oriented ties with Japan, despite some concerns that a landslide victory by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may embolden her ultraconservative policy approach.
Asked about the future direction of bilateral ties following the election results in Japan, presidential spokesperson Kim Nam-joon said Seoul's position remains unchanged in "exchanging views on directions for the stable development of relations and focusing on addressing shared challenges together."
"Bilateral relations should move forward in a future-oriented manner," Kim said, citing agreements reached during summit talks between Lee and Takaichi.
The two leaders have held two summit meetings since Takaichi took office last October, during which they agreed to advance bilateral relations through cooperation in future-oriented areas and regular leader-level exchanges known as "shuttle diplomacy."
Later on Monday, Takaichi thanked Lee for his message and expressed hope to develop bilateral ties in a "future-oriented and stable manner," adding that she looks forward to visiting South Korea as part of the shuttle diplomacy framework.
Lee has pledged to pursue a "two-track" approach to diplomacy with Japan by expanding future-oriented cooperation while continuing to address unresolved wartime history issues stemming from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea.
