Trump says U.S. will come out with 'different tariffs on different countries' in wake of tariff ruling

WASHINGTON, March 3 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration will come up with "different tariffs" on "different countries," after a Supreme Court ruling invalidated country-specific "reciprocal" tariffs on trading partners, including South Korea, last month.
Trump spoke to the press during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House, as his administration is working on replacing the invalidated tariffs with new duties to maintain his tariff policy following the high court's ruling.
On Feb. 20, the court ruled against Trump's use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify reciprocal tariffs and other duties, upholding a lower court's ruling that the IEEPA did not give the president the power to impose the levies.
"We have a five-month period, up to five months, where we can go at 15 percent," Trump said, referring to the temporary tariff that his administration imposed under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act following the Supreme Court ruling against the IEEPA tariffs.
"While we're doing that, as you know, we're doing the various studies and things, and we'll be coming out with tariffs -- different tariffs on different countries," he added.
On Feb. 24, the Trump administration started imposing a 10 percent global tariff under Section 122. The rate could rise to 15 percent, as Trump threatened to do so.
U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer has also unveiled plans to conduct trade investigations under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, which he said are expected to cover "most major trading partners." Section 301 allows the USTR to investigate "unfair" trade practices on a country-by-country basis, Greer has said.
