SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- Netflix will unveil a brand-new chilling documentary series “In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal,” which will examine the true stories of four Korean leaders who shook the Korean society in different times by referring to themselves as “Gods," on Mar. 3, the world’s largest online streaming service announced Thursday.
The upcoming 8-part documentary series will sequentially shed light on the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), whose members came to name themselves God’s brides, the Odaeyang mass suicide where thirty-two members of a religious sect who believed in doomsday were found dead, and the pseudo-religion “Aga Dongsan” that left the country speechless, as well as a man who claimed to be God of all people.
All 8 episodes will delve deeper into the tragedies that the four people brought upon society by calling themselves gods, as well as the victims of each incident. The documentary will also contain the truth and initial testimonies that have not been publicized so far.
Producer Cho Sung-hyun, who was in charge of delivering the series, said, “There have been more than 100 people in South Korea who claimed to be messiahs only in 2023. The documentary ‘In the Name of God’ will follow the stories of people who all encountered different messiahs but ended up suffering from similar physical harms and mental wrecks.”
“I hope this documentary will leave viewers with questions about whether those alleged messiahs that the victims supported with everything are really gods they claim to be and also why our society still has so many victims of similar crises.”
