SEOUL, June 1 (Yonhap) -- Studio Dragon and
JTBC Studio, the two largest drama producers in Korea, have announced to enter
into the U.S. market.
On Monday Studio Dragon agreed to co-produce
the American drama series "The Big Door Prize" with Skydance
Television for Apple TV+).
While Studio Dragon stressed that it has
previously exported numerous contents to various countries, it is the first
time for a South Korean drama production company to participate in creating a drama
series to be aired in the U.S.
JTBC Studio has now acquired Wiip, which is
an American television studio founded by Paul Lee, who is also the founder of
BBC America and former president of ABC Network and ABC Studio.
As Wiip has been praised for making high-quality
drama series in the past, people have started to wonder what kind of synergy it
will create with JTBC Studio in the future.
Although content production and
distribution are the most active among the global markets, the industry is also
paying attention to the background and achievements of Korean drama production
houses that have succeed to enter the U.S. market.
While it is commonly said that Korean dramas
are cheap, fast, and fun to make within the local and foreign production
industries, it was further proved by online video services (OTT), especially Netflix.
In addition to the zombie historical drama
"Kingdom," Netflix has invested in the production of many original
Korean dramas, which has allowed South Korea to be recognized as the base for
Asian content production.
Netflix's "Kingdom" and
"Sweet Home" and Studio Dragon's "Crash Landing on You" and
"Hotel Del Luna" have also succeeded in catching the attention of local
and foreign fans interested in Hallyu.
Jung Duk-hyun, a pop culture critic,
explained, "As the content production and consumption environment is centered
around OTT, global collaboration is becoming more natural," adding, "In
particular, the capabilities of Korean production companies are being recognized
overseas, so there are also proposals coming in from abroad."
