Hit-making PD returns with suspenseful Netflix variety 'Agents of Mystery'
By Woo Jae-yeon
SEOUL, June 18 (Yonhap) -- Netflix's latest Korean original variety show, "Agents of Mystery," leans more heavily into adventurous and thrilling elements than traditional mystery-solving narratives, its producer said, describing it as "a mystery adventure," a genre that he's "been working hard on."
"The primary focus is having the participants enjoy the adventurous experiences the show offers," Jung Jong-yeon said during a press event Tuesday, adding "the agents" must navigate each scenario as realistically as possible, relying on their wits and intellectual abilities within the tightly crafted storylines.
The six-part series follows six individuals from the Korean entertainment industry, each with a unique personality, as they come together to solve mysteries that defy scientific explanation. They race against time to decipher each puzzle in strange locations.
Fans of adventure and mystery genres have pinned high expectations on the show by the star producer, who has shown an impressive track record of hit variety shows, like Netflix's "The Devil's Plan," tvN's "Great Escape" and Tving's "Girls' High School Mystery Class."
Drawing on his past experiences where horror and supernatural genres gripped audiences, Jung highlighted thrilling adventures as the main draw of "Agents of Mystery," with mystery-solving taking a backseat.
The six investigators in the show are singer John Park, comedians Lee Yong-jin and Lee Eun-ji, actors Kim Do-hoon of Disney+'s "Moving" and Lee Hye-ri, best known for her role in "Reply 1988," and Karina, the leader of the popular K-pop girl group aespa.
"Ever since 'Great Escape,' I've been a big fan of his shows and longed to be a part of them," the comedian Lee said. "Just like no actor would turn down a role in a Bong Joon-ho film, there was no way I could pass up this opportunity," he added, drawing a comparison between the producer and the Oscar-winning director of "Parasite."
Making her variety show debut, Karina said fans could see her most unvarnished, natural self in the show, as she fully immersed herself in it.
"Despite knowing it was just for filming and that I could leave the set afterwards, we were all gripped by a very real fear of not making it out," the singer-rapper said. "There was a moment where I was so frightened that I could barely speak."
"I've often been cast as the charismatic leader, but this time around, you'll see me as the youngest, most naive 'maknae' of the cast. You will find new facets of my personality and my unfiltered, genuine reactions throughout the show."
The entire series premieres at 4 p.m. Tuesday on the streaming platform.
