SEOUL, July 22 (Yonhap) -- Filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho’s latest film "The Ugly" and the crime thriller "Project Y," starring Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo, have been officially invited to the Special Presentations section of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival this September, distributor Plus M Entertainment announced Tuesday.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), one of the world’s most prestigious film events alongside Cannes, Berlin, and Venice, is the largest of its kind in North America. The Special Presentations section showcases highly anticipated global titles.
Previous Korean films featured in this section include "Decision to Leave" (2022), "The Age of Shadows" (2016), and "The Handmaiden" (2016).
"The Ugly" tells the story of Im Dong-hwan, the son of blind seal engraver Im Young-kyu, as he uncovers the secret behind his mother's death. The film is based on Yeon Sang-ho’s 2018 self-authored and illustrated webtoon of the same name.
Actor Park Jung-min takes on the dual role of both the younger Im Young-kyu and his son Dong-hwan. The cast also includes Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-bin, Lim Sung-jae, and Han Ji-hyun.
"The Ugly" is slated for domestic release in September.

Meanwhile, "Project Y" follows two women as they attempt to escape a desperate reality by stealing hidden cash and gold bars. Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo lead the cast, with director Lee Hwan, known for "Park Hwa-young," at the helm.
TIFF's chief programmer Giovanna Fulvi praised the film, saying, “With the intense synergy of Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo, adrenaline-charged action, and a powerful mix of childhood trauma and a fight for survival, this film delivers both thrilling suspense and deep emotional resonance.”
"Project Y" will be released in Korea following its film festival premiere.
