SEOUL, July 23 (Yonhap) -- The stunning visuals spanning forests, oceans, and the skies remain intact, but the mysterious and morally ambiguous "Ash People" in the upcoming "Avatar: Fire and Ash" raise fresh intrigue.
"Avatar: Fire and Ash," one of the most anticipated theatrical releases of the year, is set to hit theaters this December. On Tuesday, a 3D trailer screening event was held at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul.
The third installment in the "Avatar" franchise, "The Seed Bearer" comes three years after the previous film, "The Way of Water."
In the trailer, the spotlight was firmly on Varang, the leader of the "Ash People," who had already drawn curiosity with the film’s fiery title. With his face painted in red and a piercing gaze, Varang gives off an intensely aggressive presence. In one scene, he tells Kiri, the daughter of Dr. Grace Augustine, “Your goddess has no power here,” hinting at the hostility of this darker Na’vi clan.
The "Ash People" are known to be nomads whose civilization was destroyed by volcanic eruptions. They are said to contrast starkly with the Na’vi tribes introduced in the first two films.
Director James Cameron had previously described "The Seed Bearer" as “possibly the boldest installment in the series” during an interview in January, hinting at an unpredictable storyline that may defy expectations.
Battle scenes showcased in the trailer traverse the skies of Pandora — the alien world where the series is set — as well as the forest and oceanic backdrops familiar from the first two films, promising grander spectacle.
The storyline appears to shift beyond the traditional human-versus-Na’vi conflict, delving into ideological rifts among Na’vi tribes with differing values.
A new massive lifeform, resembling a fusion of jellyfish and hot air balloon, also makes an appearance. Kiri, known for her deep spiritual bond with nature, is seen mesmerized by the creatures, signaling a new level of connection and communication.
Original cast members Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet return for the third film, with Una Chaplin — granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin — newly joining the cast.
