SEOUL, July 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korean users in their 20s to 50s who use over-the-top (OTT) video streaming services subscribe to an average of 2.34 platforms per person, a recent survey showed.
According to the latest issue of the Media Survey published by the Korea Press Foundation on Wednesday, the data was based on an online poll of 1,000 domestic OTT users conducted between July 16 and 21.
Among respondents, 30.1 percent said they use a single OTT service, while 30.5 percent reported using two. Those using three platforms accounted for 22.9 percent.
When asked why they subscribe to two or more services, 70.0 percent cited access to exclusive (original) content as the primary reason. This was followed by “watching video content as a hobby” (41.6 percent), “using shared accounts with no additional cost” (17.5 percent), “receiving the service for free through a telecom provider” (15.2 percent), and “benefiting from various discounts that lower the financial burden” (13.0 percent).
Netflix was the most-used OTT platform, selected by 87.0 percent of respondents. Coupang Play followed at 61.2 percent, with Tving at 39.9 percent. Disney+ and Wavve ranked fourth and fifth, at 20.5 percent and 18.7 percent, respectively.
Among Netflix users, 50.8 percent paid for the service directly, while 29.9 percent accessed it through a bundled membership with Naver Plus. The foundation noted, “Considering that traditional telecom-Netflix bundles—a long-standing representative of OTT partnership plans—only accounted for 7.5 percent, the Naver Plus bundle ratio is significant.”
Regarding policies that restrict account sharing to members of the same household—recently introduced by platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and Tving—47.6 percent of respondents said they found the policies unfair, while 46.4 percent said they were indifferent.
However, only 6.3 percent of Netflix users reported that they actually paid extra to share their account with users outside their household.
