SEOUL, April 15 (Yonhap) -- Webtoon artist and TV personality Kian84 said he aimed to create the most inconvenient accommodation possible for his new Netflix reality show, which features a bizarre guesthouse situated in the middle of the ocean.

Speaking at a press conference held at JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul on Monday, Kian84 said, “I tried to design a place that is intentionally uncomfortable,” referring to the guesthouse at the center of Netflix’s new variety series "Kian's Bizarre B&B," currently streaming in parts since April 8.

The program follows Kian84 as he runs a guesthouse for young people on Ulleung Island, joined by BTS member Jin and actress Ji Ye-eun as staff members.

“Since there are already so many cozy, well-designed accommodations, I wanted to go in the opposite direction—something romantic in its discomfort,” said Kian84. “I didn’t expect Netflix to actually use the rough blueprint I sketched in a rush like I was on a deadline.”

The uniquely designed house includes an open-air bed under the stars, a kitchen with a traditional wood-fired stove instead of a gas range, and a large pole in place of stairs for moving between floors.

Kian84 admitted the responsibility of leading the project soon overwhelmed him. “At first, I was just focused on making something novel. But after a couple of days, the pressure hit me hard, and I even broke down in tears,” he shared.

He credited Jin, a member of global pop group BTS, with holding the show together. “Honestly, Jin was the backbone of this show. Even though I designed the house, it was too tough to live in. But Jin was so strong—he even insisted on sleeping outside in the rain on the open-air bed. Meanwhile, he scolded me for sleeping inside,” Kian84 said with a laugh.

Making his first regular appearance on a reality show, Jin played a key role in cooking, cleaning, and maintaining the property, earning the nickname “MacGyin” (a play on MacGyver) for his versatility.

“I was curious about Kian as a person,” Jin said of his decision to join the show. “I wanted to observe the version of him I’ve only seen in videos up close.”

He also defended the show’s tough setup, saying, “When they tried to make things easier, I said no—because that wouldn’t be Kian’s style.”

Jin noted that the response has been extraordinary. “Usually, when I receive an award, I get a few messages from friends. But this time, over ten people messaged me saying how much they enjoyed it. That’s never happened before.”

Directed by Jung Hyo-min, known for producing the hit show "Hyori’s Homestay," Kian's Bizarre B&B  will shift into its main phase starting with the fourth episode.

“The first three episodes show the setup process, but from episode four, the core charm of the show—chemistry with the guests—really begins,” Jung said. “As operations fully begin, conflicts and stories unfold among staff and guests, making the show increasingly entertaining.”
