SEOUL, May 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korean film investor-distributor Plus M Entertainment announced Thursday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japanese telecommunications giant KDDI to enhance bilateral cooperation in the film industry.

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on a range of initiatives, including simultaneous theatrical releases in South Korea and Japan, joint marketing campaigns, co-hosting remastered film screenings under the "Korea-Japan Remastering Screening" banner, co-development and remakes of intellectual property (IP), and talent exchange programs.

KDDI, a leading telecom operator in Japan, entered the film production and distribution business in 2022. It plans to distribute 10 Korean films in Japan, including Hear Me, Love in the Big City, and aespa: My First Page.

Plus M highlighted that the partnership aims to shorten the time lag between Korean films’ domestic and Japanese releases. Until now, Korean films have typically been released in Japan six months to a year after their domestic run—unlike markets such as Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, where release schedules closely align with Korea.

As the first titles to be jointly released under the new initiative, Plus M and KDDI have selected Project Y, a Korean film starring Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo, and Night Flower, a Japanese film directed by Eiji Uchida.

“We are excited to lay the groundwork for bringing Plus M’s high-quality content to the Japanese market in earnest,” a Plus M official said. “We look forward to generating meaningful synergy with KDDI.”

A representative from KDDI added, “It is significant that KDDI’s content will be introduced to the Korean market through Plus M. We aim to continue actively promoting Korean and Japanese films alike.”
