Japanese anime ‘Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc’ tops weekend box office with 2.5 million viewers

SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) -- Japanese animated film “Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” topped the South Korean box office over the weekend, maintaining its strong performance for three consecutive weeks.

 

According to data from the Korean Film Council released Monday, the film drew about 219,000 moviegoers between Friday and Sunday, accounting for 30.1 percent of total ticket sales. Since its release on Sept. 24, it has attracted about 2.55 million cumulative viewers.

 

The Japanese thriller “Exit No. 8,” based on the popular video game of the same name, ranked second in its first weekend with about 137,000 viewers (17.8 percent).

 

Director Ra Hee-chan’s Korean comedy “Boss” placed third with about 58,800 admissions, followed closely by the rereleased animated film “Coraline” with 58,100. Director Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” ranked fifth with 47,000 viewers and has now drawn a total of 2.87 million.

 

As of 9 a.m. Monday, upcoming comedy film “First Ride,” starring Kang Ha-neul, Kim Young-kwang, Cha Eun-woo, Kang Young-seok, and Han Sun-hwa, topped the reservation charts with 68,000 presold tickets (32.2 percent).

 

“Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” followed with 25,000 advance sales (11.9 percent), while Netflix’s animated feature “K-pop Demon Hunters,” scheduled for a three-day singalong screening event starting Oct. 31, ranked third with 22,000 presales (10.5 percent).
