SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- The crime action movie, “The Roundup” starring Ma Dong-seok, is not slowing down. Not only did it beat “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (7.55 million viewers) to claim the most successful movie title since the COVID-19 pandemic, it is looking forward a cumulative audience of 10 million.

If “The Roundup” exceeds 10 million viewers, it will be recorded as the first 10 million movie in this endemic era, three years after Director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite.”

On the 5th, according to the integrated computer network for movie theater tickets of the Korean Film Council, “The Roundup” added 466,000 people the day before, its 18th day of release, increasing the cumulative number of audiences to 8,316,000.

Since its release on the 18th of last month, “The Roundup” has topped the box office every day except for one day, showing off its popularity even in the third week of its release.

The success of “The Roundup” has exceeded the expectations in many ways.

Initially, theaters predicted that with the release of the Hollywood blockbuster “Jurassic World: Dominion (hereinafter 'Jurassic World 3')”, the number of audience would move in large numbers. “The Roundup” almost monopolized the audience for two weeks after its release without any competition and was predicted that it would be difficult to significantly exceed the box office record of the first sequence (The Outlaws), as the myth “there is no brother like an older brother.”

However, on the 14th day of its release, on the 31st of May, the number of audiences exceeded 7 million, surpassing the previous volume of 6.88 million, and was not going downhill until “Jurassic World 3,” which was released the next day.

“The Roundup” lost first place at the box office on the 1st, the opening day of “Jurassic World 3,” but regained the top spot the next day and is showing its popularity by ranking the 1st during the holidays, until the Memorial Day on the 6th.

The screening share, which remained around 70% after its release, plummeted to 29.1% with the release of "Jurassic World 3" on the 1st, but rose to 40.6% within three days. This means that theaters are giving back screens to “The Roundup.”

While the likes and dislikes of the audience who came out after seeing “Jurassic World 3” were clearly divided, “The Roundup” mostly only got favorable reviews and are actively spreading through the word of mouth. Currently, “The Roundup” is far ahead of “Jurassic World 3” in Naver Ratings and CGV Golden Egg Index, which reflects the audience’s ratings.

Not only is the barrier to entry not high for a series, but this was also the effect of lowering the rating to 15-year-old viewers. The casting of Son Seok-koo, who has emerged as a “trend actor” these days with the drama “My Liberation Journal” also played a part. According to CGV analysis, teenagers accounted
for 3.5% of the reservation, and by gender, females accounted for 53.5%, a little bit more than males (46.5%).

However, “Broker', which will be released on the 8th, is expected to give it a change for the box office. The lead actor, Song Kang-ho, won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival at the end of last month, collecting topics, and the ticket power of other leading actors such as Gang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun (IU), and Bae Doo-na is also overwhelming. Although director Hirokazu Kore-eda's previous works, who directed “Broker,” have only managed to gather around 100,000 viewers in Korea, it is expected to far exceed the past performance this time.

“Before the release of ‘The Roundup,’ the concern was about whether it would surpass the box office record of the first movie, but now we are carefully anticipating the number of viewers to exceed 10 million,” said a multiplex official. “With a big hit movie even before the peak season when blockbuster films are released, the expectations for Korean films have risen even further.”
