JEJU, Aug. 21 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors have requested a three-year prison sentence for actress Hwang Jung-eum, who has been indicted on charges of embezzling about 4.3 billion won in company funds.

At the final trial held on Thursday at Jeju District Court, prosecutors asked the court to sentence Hwang to three years in prison for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement).

Hwang is accused of embezzling 4.34 billion won in 2022 from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, an agency she fully owns. Hwang is the company’s sole artist.

She reportedly invested 4.2 billion won of the embezzled money in cryptocurrency, while the remainder was used for property tax, local tax, and credit card payments.

During the trial, Hwang admitted to all charges. Her side also repaid the entire sum taken as temporary withdrawals from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, making restitution in two installments on May 30 and June 5.

The prosecution stated, "We determined the sentence taking into account the circumstances."

The court’s sentencing hearing for Hwang is scheduled for September.
