SEOUL, July 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korean SF fantasy film "Omniscient Reader: The Prophet" topped the daily box office with over 120,000 viewers on its opening day.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing system on Thursday, "Omniscient Reader: The Prophet" attracted approximately 122,000 moviegoers on Wednesday, claiming the No. 1 spot with a 44.6 percent share of total ticket sales.
Based on the popular web novel of the same name, "Omniscient Reader: The Prophet" follows the story of a world where the events of a serialized online novel become reality. The film stars Ahn Hyo-seop, Lee Min-ho, Chae Soo-bin, and Nana, and is directed by Kim Byung-woo, known for his previous works "The Terror Live" and "PMC: The Bunker."
The film currently holds an 85 percent score on CGV’s Egg Index, which reflects audience satisfaction. While the film has been praised for its original premise and immersive direction, some critics say it falls short in capturing the essence of the source material. Opinions on the film's computer-generated imagery (CG) remain divided.
"F1: The Movie," starring Brad Pitt, which previously held the top spot, fell to second place with around 40,000 viewers. Its cumulative audience has now surpassed 2.01 million.
