SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- In a world overwhelmed by stress and overstimulation, people increasingly seek comfort in harmless, heartwarming moments—whether it’s watching puppies play with babies or pandas leisurely chewing on bamboo.

The upcoming South Korean film "Pretty Crazy" taps into that universal yearning for gentleness through its protagonist, Gil-gu, an unemployed young man played by Ahn Bo-hyun. Having quietly stepped away from the corporate grind, he bears no resentment and instead tends to his own emotional wounds in silence.

One day, a neighbor with a peculiar request turns to Gil-gu for help. Sun-ji (played by Lim Yoon-a), a seemingly calm and soft-spoken woman, transforms completely at dawn each day, as if possessed by another persona. Her father Jang-soo (Sung Dong-il), who struggles to care for her alone, asks Gil-gu to serve as her part-time guardian.

Though startled by the odd situation, Gil-gu accepts—and in doing so, his quiet demeanor and innate empathy begin to shine. Without fanfare, he adapts to Sun-ji’s moods, understanding what she likes and dislikes, never asserting his pride or suppressing his feelings, even when it puts him at a disadvantage.

Sun-ji, who had been throwing objects and eating dirt in her nighttime state, begins to thaw in the presence of Gil-gu’s steadfast kindness. His quiet persistence gradually breaks through her emotional barriers.

Pretty Crazy marks the return of director Lee Sang-geun, six years after his widely acclaimed debut Exit (2019). The new film blends family drama, romance and comedy, drawing both gentle laughter and unexpected emotional resonance.

Lim Yoon-a delivers a compelling dual performance as the gentle “daytime Sun-ji” and the fierce, chaotic “nighttime Sun-ji,” switching between the two with ease. Her portrayal adds a unique dynamic to the long list of eccentric daughters Sung Dong-il has played alongside in past works. As the beleaguered but warm-hearted father, Sung offers a pitch-perfect performance.

Ahn Bo-hyun’s portrayal of Gil-gu recalls a large, clumsy puppy—naïve, well-meaning and deeply endearing. His character serves as a reminder that in a chaotic world, softness and sincerity still hold quiet power.

Pretty Crazy opens in local theaters on Aug. 13. The film has a runtime of 112 minutes and is rated for viewers aged 12 and above.
