SEOUL, June 25 (Yonhap) -- The racing film “F1 The Movie” starring Brad Pitt is off to a strong start, with more than 100,000 advance tickets sold for its release on Tuesday.

According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network for theater admissions, as of 8 a.m. on that day, the reservation rate for “F1 The Movie” stood at 37.7 percent, with approximately 101,000 reserved viewers.

It ranked No. 1 in advance reservations, far surpassing the horror film “Noise” starring Lee Sun-bin, which also opens the same day (8.4 percent, about 22,000 reservations).

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who drew 8.23 million viewers with “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022), “F1 The Movie” follows Sonny (played by Brad Pitt), a once-promising Formula One (F1) driver who is past his prime, as he teams up with rookie Joshua (Damson Idris) to compete in an F1 race. The film is characterized by its fast-paced race scenes and realistic depiction of the F1 world.

Attention is now focused on whether this film can help revive the theater industry amid a string of recent underperforming blockbusters.

Last week, Disney and Pixar’s animated film “Elio” and the zombie flick “28 Years Later” were released but failed to meet expectations.

As of the previous day, “Elio” had attracted about 289,000 cumulative viewers, while “28 Years Later” drew about 267,000. On weekdays, both films had daily attendance drop to the 10,000 range.
