Kim Daljin Art Research Center Opens 102 New Exhibition Spaces Throughout 2024

SEOUL, Dec. 28 (Yonhap) -- A total of 102 new exhibition spaces have opened this year, the Kim Daljin Art Research Center reported on the 27th.

The number of newly opened exhibition spaces had been steadily increasing since the center began its survey in 2005. However, the trend reversed with a decline during the COVID-19 pandemic starting in 2020. This year saw a rebound, with 102 new spaces opening, surpassing last year's total of 96.

By region, Seoul led with 37 new exhibition spaces, followed by Gyeonggi Province with 10 and Busan with 9. Within Seoul, the Gangnam District alone saw the addition of 14 new spaces.

In terms of the type of exhibition spaces, galleries topped the list with 52 new openings, followed by 25 multipurpose cultural spaces, 11 art museums, and 4 museums.

Key openings this year include the Daegu Kansong Art Museum, the Solol Art Museum in Gangneung, Odium in Seoul, the Busan Modern History Museum, and the National Incheon Maritime Museum.

The findings reflect the ongoing recovery and diversification of exhibition spaces, signaling a resurgence in cultural and artistic activities across the country.
