SEOUL, March 17 (Yonhap) -- With the arrival of spring, the once tightly shut doors and windows of Changdeokgung Palace are now open to the public.

The Korea Heritage Service (KHS) announced on Monday that from March 18 to 23, it will hold the "Changdeokgung Light and Breeze Experience" event, allowing visitors to see the interiors of major palace buildings.

The term "changho" refers to traditional Korean windows and doors designed to provide lighting and ventilation. They play a crucial role in extending the lifespan of buildings by allowing natural light and airflow.

This year's event will feature open doors at Heejeongdang, Nakseonjae, Seongjeonggak, and Gwollae Gaksa. Notably, the Seongjeonggak area, where the crown prince resided during the Joseon Dynasty, will be open to the public for the first time. Visitors will also get a rare glimpse inside Bochunjeong Pavilion, which means "Pavilion Announcing Spring."

The usually restricted areas such as the southern annex of Heejeongdang and Gwollae Gaksa will be accessible. Visitors can freely explore the exterior of these buildings without prior reservations. However, access may be temporarily restricted in case of strong winds or rain.

The Palace and Royal Tombs Heritage Division has partnered with the cyber diplomatic organization VANK to promote Korea’s royal palaces, Jongmyo Shrine, and the Joseon Royal Tombs through specially designed mobile wallpapers.

These wallpapers feature images of Korea’s major heritage sites, including Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, and Deoksugung Palaces, as well as Jongmyo Shrine, Sajikdan Altar, Chilgeung (Yuksanggung), Sungnyemun Gate, and the Joseon Royal Tombs. Monthly event schedules are also included.
