SEOUL, June 14 (Yonhap) -- Singer-turned-actor Lee Ho-won has been named the Busan Metropolitan Government’s new safety ambassador.

Ahead of a conference to test response readiness to possible natural disasters in the summer, the local government appointed Lee as its goodwill ambassador to promote safety on Wednesday morning.

As an honorary ambassador, Lee will actively participate in safety campaigns to promote any safety-related policies in Busan over the next two years.

Lee has been slated to star as the main lead of the upcoming sports film “Sanbok-doro” (tentative title), which follows the story of a Busan-born boxer Jang Jung-gu becoming the world-renowned champion. He is currently shooting the film in Busan.

Later today, Mayor Park Hyung-joon plans to visit Busan’s Maechukji Village, the movie’s filming site, to root for the production crew and cast, while emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety policies.

“While serving as a safety ambassador for Busan for the next two years, I will put my utmost effort to subsidize in creating a social atmosphere where safety can be appreciated as much as our K-culture now is today,” Lee said, adding, “I will do my best to promote safety in my hometown of Busan.
