SEOUL, July 2 (Yonhap) -- The latest installment in the Jurassic World franchise, "Jurassic World: Rebirth," opens with renewed ambition, departing from its predecessors by introducing a fresh storyline and new characters while maintaining the tension and scale expected of the dinosaur-themed series.

The film, the fourth in the Jurassic World reboot series, follows widespread criticism of earlier sequels for lacking the intensity and originality of Steven Spielberg's 1993 classic, "Jurassic Park." While the first Jurassic World film benefited from nostalgia and performed well at the box office, the following two films struggled to attract critical or commercial success, often cited for uninspired storytelling and insufficiently frightening visuals.

Rebirth takes place five years after a laboratory accident resulted in humans and dinosaurs coexisting. Most dinosaurs have failed to adapt to climate changes, leading to their extinction or captivity, with only a few surviving in equatorial regions. The initial excitement surrounding dinosaurs has faded from public interest.

The film centers on Martin (Rupert Friend), an employee at a pharmaceutical company aiming to develop a heart disease treatment using dinosaur DNA. He recruits Zora (Scarlett Johansson), a seasoned extraction operative, to collect blood samples from surviving dinosaurs. Zora assembles a specialized team and travels to a dangerous island where dinosaurs still roam.

Meanwhile, Ruben (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), a middle-aged man on a sailing trip with his two daughters, becomes inadvertently involved after their boat is attacked by a sea dinosaur. Rescued by Zora’s team, they join the perilous expedition.

While the characters and plot employ familiar tropes—such as the battle-hardened soldier, grieving parent, and overprotective father—the film delivers high-tension sequences that sustain momentum throughout its 133-minute runtime. The mission, which requires obtaining samples from dinosaurs in the ocean, on land, and in the air, allows for diverse and suspenseful set pieces.

One notable scene features a massive sea dinosaur pursuing and attacking a boat, evoking comparisons to Spielberg’s Jaws (1975). As the story progresses, genetically modified hybrid dinosaurs appear, intensifying the threat faced by the team. These new creatures exhibit extreme violence, surpassing the ferocity of those seen in earlier installments.

The dinosaurs—Titanosaurus, Mosasaurus, and Quetzalcoatlus—are based on real prehistoric species and were created through computer graphics after over 700 concept drawings. Filming took place on location in Thailand and Malta to enhance realism.

Johansson, best known for her role as Black Widow in Marvel’s Avengers franchise, plays a central role in the film’s suspense. Though less combat-focused than in previous action films, she performs physically demanding scenes, including cliff climbing and underwater chases.

Speaking at a press conference held in Seoul on Tuesday, Johansson expressed her enthusiasm for joining the franchise. “Being part of the Jurassic universe is a great honor,” she said. “It’s a childhood dream come true.”

"Jurassic World: Rebirth" opens in South Korean theaters on July 2. The film is rated 12 and over.
