Japanese diplomat summoned over Sado mine
Daisuke Namioka, a minister of economic affairs at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, is summoned to the foreign ministry in Seoul on Jan. 20, 2023, as the ministry lodged a formal protest against Tokyo's latest attempt to list a former gold mine on Sado Island in the Japanese prefecture of Niigata as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This follows Japan's first unsuccessful attempt in February 2022. South Korea opposes the listing as many Koreans were forced into hard labor there during Japan's 1910-45 colonization of the Korean Peninsula. (Yonhap)
