S. Korea to bolster anti-drone capability at major ports
SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- The oceans ministry said Monday it has signed an agreement with local port authorities to beef up anti-drone capabilities at local ports amid growing security concerns posed by unauthorized drones.
Under the agreement, South Korea plans to operate anti-drone systems at ports in Busan, Incheon and Ulsan by next year, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The system will also be established in Yeosu, 316 kilometers south of Seoul, by 2026.
The oceans ministry said the system will comprise equipment to identify the approach of drones, such as radar, cameras and radio frequency scanners, along with jammers that can disable them.
"As seen in recent wars, drones have emerged as significant threats. Therefore, we need to promptly prepare for the approach and penetration of illegal drones at ports, which are key facilities for the nation," Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
"The country's defense system will be further strengthened if we successfully establish anti-drone systems at major ports," he added.
