S. Korea discusses sustainable fishing in Antarctic with global partners
SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- The oceans ministry said Monday that it discussed sustainable fishing and marine conservation with global partners during an international meeting on the Antarctic environment.
South Korea participated in the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources meeting in Australia last week, where 27 member countries called for stronger efforts to preserve the environment in the region, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
"South Korea actively participated in discussions on marine life protection and enhancing marine safety, solidifying its role as a leader in the maritime sector," Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung said of the meeting.
Kang added the country will continue efforts to ensure that South Korean vessels engage in lawful fishing operations in the area.
South Korea, meanwhile, has received permission to harvest toothfish in Antarctic waters using 10 vessels, the ministry said.
