FM Cho visits main U.S. military base in S. Korea

By Kim Seung-yeon

SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Yonhap) -- Foreign Minister Cho Hyun visited Camp Humphreys, the main U.S. military base south of Seoul, on Friday and met with the commander of the U.S. Forces Korea to discuss alliance issues, officials said.

Cho visited Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, some 60 kilometers away from the capital, for a meeting with U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson, the foreign ministry said.

Cho and Brunson were expected to discuss the bilateral alliance, including the U.S. drive for "alliance modernization," a concept centering on allies increasing their defense spending and shouldering greater security burdens.

They also likely discussed the combined military posture against North Korean threats.

The new U.S. National Defense Strategy, released by the Pentagon, calls on South Korea to take "primary" responsibility to deter North Korea with "critical, but more limited" U.S. support, a shift that the U.S. says is in line with its interest in updating U.S. force posture on the Korean Peninsula.
