Ex-PPP leader Han Dong-hoon to announce presidential bid this week

By Chae Yun-hwan

SEOUL, April 8 (Yonhap) -- A former leader of the conservative People Power Party (PPP), Han Dong-hoon, will announce his presidential bid this week for the June 3 election, officials close to Han said Tuesday.

Han will hold a press conference Thursday at the National Assembly in Seoul to announce his bid for the upcoming presidential election, which will be held after the ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid, according to a press notice sent by Han's side.

Han, a former prosecutor who was previously considered one of Yoon's closest confidantes, expressed opposition to Yoon's martial law declaration in December immediately after it was announced.

He led a group of PPP lawmakers to vote to reject the martial law decree at the National Assembly, hours after its declaration.

Han stepped down as PPP leader after the National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon.

South Korea will hold a presidential election on June 3, after the Constitutional Court upheld Yoon's impeachment last Friday, forcing him out of office.
