'Harbin' breaks post-pandemic Christmas box-office record

SEOUL, Dec. 26 (Yonhap) -- The historical drama "Harbin" dominated the local box office on Christmas Day, setting a new post-pandemic record for holiday attendance, its distributor said Thursday.

The film drew 847,819 moviegoers on the day, reaching a cumulative audience of 1.25 million within just two days of its release, according to CJ ENM.

Set in 1909, the film chronicles a high-stakes espionage mission in northern China that culminates in a pivotal moment of Korean history: the assassination by independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun (1879-1910) of Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first prime minister and resident-general of Korea, at Harbin Station.

Korea was under brutal Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945.

Leading actor Hyun Bin portrays Ahn, supported by an ensemble cast, including Park Jung-min, Jeon Yeo-been, Jo Woo-jin, Yoo Jae-myung, Park Hoon and Lee Dong-wook.
