Trump agrees to suspend bombing of Iran for 2 weeks, 'subject' to Hormuz Strait reopening

By Song Sang-ho

WASHINGTON, April 7 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he agreed to suspend the bombing of Iran for two weeks, subject to the Islamic Republic agreeing to the "complete" and "immediate" reopening of the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

Trump's announcement in a social media post came hours after he heaped pressure on Iran to meet the deadline for reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz, which was set for 8 p.m. Tuesday, warning that "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again."

"I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," he wrote on Truth Social.

"This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East," Trump added.

He said that the decision on the temporary suspension of the bombing is "subject to" Iran "agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING" of the Strait of Hormuz, and based on his talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Trump said that the U.S. received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he believes is a "workable basis" on which to negotiate.

"Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated," he said.

"On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution."
