SEOUL, Mar. 7 (Yonhap) – S. Korean romance drama “Twenty-Five Twenty-One” starring Kim Tae-ri and Nam Joo-hyuk marked the viewer rate of two digits.

tvN’s weekend drama “Twenty-Five Twenty-One,” which was aired on Mar. 6 at 9 p.m., recorded a viewer rating of 10.9 percent, according to the ratings company Nielsen Korea on Mar. 7.

The episode on Sunday depicts the relationship of Na Hui-do(Kim Tae-ri) and Baek Yi-jin(Nam Joo-hyuk) that is slightly changing.

Na, who heard a recording of Baek saying that he loved someone in the past, could not hide her confusion, but at the same time she was also troubled by the gap between herself and Baek, who became a reporter to make a living.

“Twenty-Five Twenty-One,” a drama that depicts the confusion and development of the youth when IMF(International Monetary Fund) financial crisis threatens to slash their dreams in 1997, continued to hit a new record by drawing attention of the viewers.

Analysts say that the popularity of “Twenty-Five Twenty-One” was largely attributed to the viewers’ mind related to long-term sequelae of COVID-19.

As there have been consistent economic and psychological difficulties due to COVID-19, the characters' pure passion for their dreams and young love stories seem to comfort viewers.

Jung Duk-hyun, a Korean pop culture critic, said, "Since the audience is generally exhausted due to COVID-19, people show more favorable reviews on stories of everyday life rather than dramatized stories,” adding, “’Twenty-Five Twenty-One’ has something in common with the popular drama ‘Our Beloved Summer,’ which recently ended.”

The drama critic Kong Hee-jung also analyzed, "The drama was well designed to comfort viewers as they watch the main characters heading towards their dreams,” adding, “I guess the public also wants to receive support from the characters in the drama.”

Moreover, it is analyzed that the drama gained popularity as the idea of IMF financial crisis relates to the current situation of COVID-19

Na Hui-do in the drama tries her best to transfer to another school after her fencing team was disbanded due to the IMF financial crisis, while Baek Yi-jin works hard to accept his reality after his father’s business went bankrupt and was degenerated from “rich guy” to “poor guy.”

Critic Jung Duk-hyun said, "The audience feels nostalgia for retro, but many people get emotionally comforted by the drama,” adding, “For those who have experienced the generation, it delivers the message that ‘the difficulties of the current situation will be alleviated someday.”
