SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- The special summer of Taebaek city, Gangwon province, has begun.

Taebaek City, with an average elevation of 902 meters above sea level, which is 3.4 times higher than Namsan in Seoul, is famous as a summer paradise as it does not experience heat waves.

Due to this, various events are held in Taebaek even in midsummer.

The Han River and Nakdong River Source Festival, the coolest summer festival in Korea this year, started on July 29.

The Han River and Nakdong River Balwonji Festival, which is coming back offline in three years, will be held for 10 days until August 7 at Hwangji Pond, Jungang-ro, Geomryongso, Culture and Arts Center, and many more.

The main events include a Cool Cinema, water activities in the cold water, and a water park in the middle of the city.

Then, on the night of July 30 and 31, a unique event called "Journey to the Milky Way with Writer Jeon Je-hoon" will be held.

It is an event to appreciate the beautiful Milky Way at hot spots cooler than the city at places including the Hambaek Mountain, O2 Resort, Tantan Park, Taebaeksan National Park Danggol Plaza, Chujeon Station, Sports Park, and Yongyeon Cave.

Earlier, on July 22, the Taebaek Sunflower Festival opened in Guwau.

There is a windy hill near Guwau.

The cool early autumn wind blows all day even in midsummer at the top of the Maebongsan Mountain, which is 1,286m above sea level.

The city started operating a shuttle bus from July 23 for tourists climbing the windy hill in search of the wind of early autumn.

"Taebaek, which does not require air conditioners, has begun to attract attention as a travel destination," said Taebaek city. "One will never forget Taebaek's cold summer once they get to experience it."
