SEOUL September, 15 (Yonhap) -- The 47th “Jeongseon Arirang Festival” kicked off in Jeongseon located within Gangwon Province on Thursday.
Starting on September 15, “Jeongseon Arirang Festival” will be held under the theme of “I miss you Jeongseon, and Jeongseon Arirang” until September 18 around Jeongseon Public Stadium.
“Jeongseon Arirang Festival” has returned in three years due to the wide spread of COVID 19,
The opening ceremony of “Jeongseon Arirang Festival” will consist of collaborative stage of Song Ga-in, South Korean trot, Korean traditional genre of music, singer and Jeongseon county choir, at 6:30 p.m. followed by Sky Band’s performance, and celebratory fireworks.
In the morning of September 15, Chil Hyun ritual was held in Chil Hyun Sa shrine.
Chil Hyun are the seven of the loyal seonbis, educated class of people, who fought against the establishment of Chosun dynasty and served the royal family of Goryeo dynasty after stepping away from their position.
Seven of the seonbis came up with the poem encompassing their pent up anger and agony towards the fall of Goryeo Dynasty, which layed the foundation of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco, Jeongseon Arirang.
Throughout the festival, holders of important intangible cultural properties Kim Nam-ki, Kim Hyung-cho, Kim Gil-ja and more will take the stage, followed by street parade performance of 40 teams modern interpretation of Arirang.
Moreover, “Apop, combination of K-pop and arirang, competition,” “Arirang singing Competition” and more will be held throughout the festival.
“We have prepared a festival which will lay the international foundation of South Korean Heritage, Jeongseon Arirang by giving a modern twist to it.” art director Lee Jae-won described.
