MMCA to step up collaborations with overseas museums, galleries

SEOUL January 10 (Yonhap)-- National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, shortened as MMCA will be collaborating with The Guggenheim Museum and host an exhibition featuring Korean experimental art from 1960 to 1970 in both New York and Seoul.

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul, will host various celebratory events in order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the facility, and release a booklet featuring list of exhibited objects within the Lee Kun-hee Collection from the past showings within 2023.

Museum disclosed series of information regarding their plans for 2023 on Tuesday.

Upcoming exhibition “The Avant Garde: Experimental Art in South Korea,1960s-70s” will feature in total 100 pieces by 26 artists starting with South Korean artist Kim Young-jin, Sung Neung-kyung, Lee Kang-so and more who represents the experimental arts scene within S.Korea. After showcasing “The Avant Garde: Experimental Art in South Korea,1960s-70s” in South Korea from May to July, Guggenheim Museum will showcase the exhibition in September, followed by Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in February.

Exhibition “Prayer for Life” which was held in between June through September of 2022 at the MMCA of Gwacheon, will be introduced in San Diego Museum of Art in October, and in November “Current and the Past of Korean art” (working title) will be exhibited in National Museum of China, showcasing the past and present of Korean traditional and contemporary art.

MMCA of Gwacheon will showcase a special exhibition ‘Dongsan Park Ju-hwan Collection” where it will feature 209 of the donated items of Creator of Dongsan bang Gallery, Park Ju-hwan in May of 2023.

Moreover, in November MMCA of Gwacheon will showcase a special exhibition “Korean Geometric Abstract Art” where it will provide visitors with the developmental history of the geometric abstract art in Korea by featuring pieces by Yoo Young-kuk, Byun Young-won, and more.

For the solo exhibition, MMCA located within Deoksugung will showcase artist Jang Wook-jin’s life’s work from the pieces artist drew at the early stages of his art career to oil paintings, pen drawing as more on July.

Continuing on in August, founding father of the experimental art in South Korea Kim Ku-lim’s solo exhibition is planned.

In September MMCA of Cheongju will showcase all 112 of Pablo Picasso’s ceramics artwork included within Lee Kun-hee’s collection in time for the Cheungju ceramics Biennale.

Moreover, MMCA of Deoksugung will showcase embroidery exhibition where visitors can see the history of embroidery art.

Continuing on MMCA will create a booklet including over 1400 of the Lee Kun-hee collection and publish it through online.

Booklet regarding the process of preserving and restoration of artist Paik Nam-june’s “The More the Better” will be published within the second half of 2023.

“Hybrid projects,” “10th anniversary of MMCA of Seoul” and more various events will be hosted through online and offline events.

MMCA will be putting focus on coming up with the developmental plan for the digital art gallery and strive forward with their business.

Especially MMCA will work efficiently to come up with digital information display where people will be easily introduced with information regarding the exhibition they are in despite of their ability to adapt new technology.

MMCA of Cheongju will install giant media canvas within exterior of the building structure to kick off their public art project. Realistic content planned by MMCA of Cheongju will be available through mobile and they are planning on creating a kids version as well.

Starting in March of 2023, MMCA will combine all of the databases of the facility and provide every members with personal QR codes to be used at the entrance and at the souvenir shops. Moreover, MMCA plans n creating big data to help out the business side of the gallery.
