SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) – Shine Muscat, a new variety of grapes, has gained popularity by pushing out Geobong, which has been considered as the strong of tradition.
Shine Muscat is especially expected to rank No.1 in the domestic grape cultivation field this year, and it also shows a rising tendency in the New Year’s gift set.
The sales of Shine Muscat gift sets in those of total fruit gift sets increased from 1% in 2020 to 6% in New Year of 2021, according to e-mart on Jan. 10.
Thanks to the popularity of Shine Muscat, fruit gift sets are also gaining popularity.
The portion of fruits in total shares of gift sets showed a decline since 2015, but has turned to an increase again in 2019 and is steadily increasing.
e-mart attributed the change to Shine Muscat's popularity as more people started to seek fruit gift sets.
According to the survey held by the Korea Rural Economic Institute, the cultivation field of Shine Muscats in Korea, which was only 278ha in 2016, is expected to increase to 5,192ha this year, ranking No.1 among all grape varieties.
Considering the tendency, e-mart doubled the supply of Shine Muscats for gift sets in 2022 from that of New Year in 2021.
e-mart also explained that it has lowered the price of major gift sets by up to 10% due to big purchases through farmhouses of the producing district.
