SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korean representative Daeboreum Festival, commemorating the first full moon of the new year of the lunar Korean calendar, will make its return to Haeundae Beach in Busan for the first time in four years since the pandemic.

The 36th Haeundae Hot Spring Festival for Greeting the Moon will be held on Sunday, the 15th of lunar January, announced Haeundae-gu, Busan.

The “Hot Spring Legend Dance Play” will be performed in front of the Haeundae-gu Office at 3: 20 p.m. on Sunday, followed by a parade at the Beach.

The Haeundae Arirang ceremony performance will then start at 4 p.m. at the white sandy beach of Haeundae, and the Festival will also be featuring the Hwiho (brush writing) performance to wish a happy Lunar New Year with big brush strokes.

A ritual table will be set up in front of the moon house to pray for well-being in the new year, which will then be followed by the main event, the moon house burning, held at 5:20 p.m. -- the time when the full moon would rise.

A Ganggangsullae, an ancient Korean dance that was first used to bring about a bountiful harvest which has now evolved into a cultural symbol for South Korea, performance will then be presented by women in hanbok holding hands with the moon house burning in the background.

The Ganggangsullae performance will be demonstrated by the Haeundae Camilia Ganggangsullae troupe -- the only Ganggangsullae troupe in the Yeongnam region that has been designated as an intangible cultural property of South Korea as well as an intangible heritage of mankind registered in UNESCO.
