SEOUL, May 12 (Yonhap) -- The Korea Heritage Service said Tuesday it will hold a memorial rite at King Sejong’s royal tomb in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, on May 15 to commemorate the 629th anniversary of the king’s birth.
The ceremony will take place at Yeongneung Royal Tomb, the burial site of King Sejong, who reigned from 1418 to 1450 and is best known for creating the Korean alphabet, Hangeul.
The event will honor the king’s achievements and virtues through traditional incense and ritual offerings.
Court music “Yeominrak,” believed to have been composed by King Sejong, will be performed, along with the royal court dance “Bongnaeeui,” which was created to pray for national peace and prosperity.
A performance of the state-designated intangible cultural heritage “Bukcheong Lion Mask Dance” will also take place around the royal tomb site at noon.

A special exhibition, titled “Hunminjeongeum and Hunmaengjeongeum,” will open at the King Sejong History and Culture Hall to mark the 100th anniversary of the promulgation of “Hunmaengjeongeum,” the Korean braille system. The exhibition will spotlight King Sejong and educator Park Du-seong.
The Sejong Royal Tomb Management Office said it will offer free admission on May 15 to both King Sejong’s tomb and the nearby royal tomb of King Hyojong.
“King Sejong’s Birthday” was designated a national commemorative day in November 2024 to honor the king’s birth on May 15, 1397, and his lasting achievements.
