SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- An interactive exhibition allowing children to experience modern art through all five senses will open in time for Children's Day on May 5, organizers said.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art said on Monday the exhibition "O-Sensory Art Museum" will run from April 30 at its Children’s Museum in Gwacheon, offering a hands-on experience for children and families.

A total of 23 works will be displayed, encouraging visitors to move beyond visual appreciation and engage their sense of smell, hearing, touch and taste.

Artist KKEKK presents sculptural works based on the story of an imaginary being named Namo, who wanders around the museum. Using soft textile sculptures, visitors can step into the role of Namo by smelling floral scents, leaning against hills or hiding inside the artworks.

Artist Um Jung-soon showcases her signature piece "Elephant Without a Nose" in child-friendly sizes, allowing young visitors to physically interact with the work.

“By touching an elephant without a nose, children can begin to question assumptions they previously took for granted,” a museum official said.

Another installation, "Moment 2001-2," combines 120 braille books and eight fans to create shifting sounds and shadows, highlighting the interplay of different senses.

Works by artist Ham Jin, known for depicting human and social themes through miniature sculptures, will also be featured. These include "People Eating Oreo" and "Inner Self 2," which require magnifying glasses to fully appreciate.

The exhibition space will also feature music produced by music director Ahn Bok-jin and scents created by aroma therapist Na Guk-hee, inspired by the four seasons of the Gwacheon museum.

On Children's Day, the museum will host a special outdoor program titled "Five Works, Five Tastes," introducing five sculptures in the sculpture park through the theme of taste.

“The exhibition is designed to help children and families engage with art more closely and discover new sensory experiences in everyday life,” said Kim Sung-hee, director of the museum.

The exhibition will run through Feb. 21 next year.
