SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korean veteran actors Shin Goo and Kang Boo-ja will receive the Silver Crown Order of Cultural Merit at the "2024 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards," the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency announced on the 28th.
This year’s awards ceremony, held on the 31st at the Haeoreum Grand Theater, National Theater of Korea, will honor 31 recipients with various orders and commendations for their contributions to popular culture.
Now in its 15th year, the Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards is the highest government award in the field, recognizing individuals across music, film, comedy, voice acting, writing, and performance arts who have contributed to the growth of the industry and inspired public admiration for popular culture.
Shin Goo, debuting in the 1962 play Cow, is known for his diverse roles across film, television, and theater, earning him the title "Master of Acting." Kang Boo-ja, who debuted in 1962 through KBS's public auditions, is praised for her emotional performances in works such as Mom and Three Days and Two Nights and Men of the Bathhouse.
The service medals include Bronze Crown Order recipients Kim Chang-wan, known for his versatile roles as a singer, DJ, and actor, and writer Lim Ki-hong, who wrote for notable programs like Family Entertainment Center. Lee Moon-sae and actor Choi Soo-jong will receive the Jade and Peony Orders of Cultural Merit for their respective achievements in music and historical drama.
The Presidential Commendation will go to blues guitarist Kim Mok-kyung, actors Yeom Hye-ran and Cho Jung-seok, musical actor Hong Kwang-ho, director Kim Han-min, and others for their influential works in their fields. Prime Minister’s Commendations will recognize figures like actor Chun Woo-hee, singer Jang Ki-ha, and music director Kim Sung-soo.
Additional recipients include actors Ahn Eun-jin and Cha Eun-woo, bands like Jannabi and Day6, comedian Yoon Sung-ho, and model Jung Ho-yeon, who will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Award. The ceremony will be broadcast live via the Korea Creative Content Agency and "The K-pop" YouTube channel.
