24th Bucheon International Animation Festival kicks off

SEOUL October 22 (Yonhap) -- The 24th Bucheon International Animation Festival, shortened as “BIAF” which has been designated by the organization, Academy kicked of its 5 days worth of journey on October 21.

BIAF which kicked off in Bucheon Korea Manhwa Museum, held its offline event for the first time in three years.

Over 500 attendees were seated at the opening ceremony starting with the Mayor of the Bucheon City, the head of BIAF, numerous directors, actors and more. The opening ceremony of the BIAF lead by the announcer Bae Sung-jae consisted of introduction of the panel, screening of the opening film, award ceremony and more throughout 150 minutes.

Director Lee Sung-kang known for the work “My Beautiful Girl Mari,” “Yobi, The Five Tailed Fox,” “Princess Aya,” and more has been awarded with a Honorary Achievement Award.

He’s superb quality of directing the piece, artistic resemblance shown throughout his animations, and how he provided S.Korean animations with an opportunity to be known throughout the world, were recognized.

For the opening film, “Little Nicholas – Happy as Can Be” by director Amandie Fredon, Benjamin Massoubre has been screened.

Animation “Little Nicholas” is based on the comic series drawn by worldly well known comic artist Jean Jaques Sempe and writer Rene Goscinny. The film was awarded with the grand prize from the Annecy International Animated Film Festival under the feature film segment.

Various programs starting with “The Chinese Year,” “Animation Rock in Bucheon,” and various talk shows and more will be held throughout the event.

Over 110 animations from 33 various nations were submitted to compete at the BIAF2022, and events will be held throughout 4 locations starting with Bucheon Korea Manhwa Museum, CGV Bucheon, Fantastic cube and in Hyundai Department store in Jungdong until October 25.

“Due to the wide spread of Covid 19, BIAF2020 was toned down to half of its original size, however, we are back to our normal size so more people will be able to truly enjoy and experience the BIAF,” adding “I hope a lot of people will love and participate in the festival.” addressed the official from the BIAF.
