SEOUL, August 27 (Yonhap) -- Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) will be held offline for the first time after the COVID-19 in Brussels, Belgium from Aug. 29 to Sept. 10.
Director Park Hoon-jung's “Witch Part 2” was nominated in the international competition section, and “Special Cargo” (directed by Park Dae-min) and 'Gangneung' (directed by Yoon Young-bin) were nominated in the thriller section, and they will be released for the first time in the country. “Midnight” (Director Oh-seung Kwon) was also nominated in the new director competition section newly established by BIFFF this year.
10 Korean films including Director Kim Han-min's hit film “Hansan: Rising Dragon,” “Confession” (Director Yoon Jong-seok), “The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey” (Director Kim Yong-wan), “The Killer: A Girl Who Deserves to Die” (Director Choi Jae-hoon), “The Neighbors” (director Yeom Ji-ho), “Sinkhole” (director Kim Ji-hoon) will debut in Europe through this festival and meet with about 60,000 local audiences.
Korean Cultural Center in Belgium announced that it will provide 10 Korean films including 'Hansan' to BIFFF.
BIFFF is known as one of the world's top three fantastic film festivals, along with Spain's Sitges Film Festival and Portugal's Fantasporto. This film festival, which will be held offline for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held in the largest scale ever (102 long films, 82 short films) for its 40th anniversary this year.
The opening film “Vesper,” directed by Krisina Buozyte and Bruno Samper, is about a girl struggling after the collapse of the Earth's ecosystem.
BIFFF has a deep connection with Korean cinema. Four films, including Bong Joon-ho's “The Host” and Kim Jee-woon's “I Saw the Devil” won the biggest award “Golden Raven” in 2017. Director Park Chan-wook won the “Crow Knight,” which is the Achievement Award.
Kim Jae-hwan, director of the Cultural Center, said, “Korean film masters such as Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook became widely known after they introduced to European audiences through BIFFF,” adding “I hope many good korean movies debut in Europe’s movie market.”
The Cultural Center will screen “Sink Hall,” which is part of the Fantastic Session, and a talk with director Kim Ji-hoon will be prepared on Sept. 4. Korean Film Night, in which local media and audiences are invited, will screen “Special Cargo” on Sept. 6 and a talk with director Park Dae-min will be held.
