Playwright Yoon Dae-sung, Known for 'Chief Inspector,' Passes Away at 86

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- Yoon Dae-sung, the renowned playwright behind the drama Chief Inspector (Susabanjang), passed away on January 27 due to natural causes. He was 86.

 

Born in 1939 near Mudanjiang, Manchuria, Yoon graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in law and completed the Drama Center Theater Academy in 1964. He debuted in 1967 when his play Departure was selected for the Dong-A Ilbo Spring Literary Contest.

 

Yoon's works often reflected strong social themes and the transformations of modern society. His notable plays include The History of a Mad Animal, Voices, Hymn of Death, Sky of the Namsadang Troupe, and If I Could Love Just Once More.

 

He was also a prolific screenwriter for television and film. His works include the dramas Chief Inspector, Frugal Family, and Three Families Under One Roof, as well as the films Wandering Stars, They Are Like Us, and Things That Fall Have Wings.

 

From 1980 to 2004, Yoon taught at the Seoul Institute of the Arts. In 2011, he became a member of the Drama Division of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea.

 

In 2015, the Yoon Dae-sung Playwriting Museum, the first dedicated to a Korean playwright, opened in Miryang Theater Village, Gyeongsangnam-do. That same year, the Yoon Dae-sung Playwriting Award was established to discover unpublished works and foster emerging writers.

 

His published works include Yoon Dae-sung's Collection of Plays, Sky of the Namsadang Troupe, The Practice of Playwriting, Goodbye, You, Complete Works of Yoon Dae-sung, and the autobiographical novel Confession.

 

Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the Dong-A Theater Award, the Korea Film Arts Award, the Modern Literature Award, the Drama Festival Playwriting Award, the Dongnang Yu Chi-jin Theater Award, and the Presidential Commendation for National Merit.

 

A funeral service is being held at Seoul National University Hospital Funeral Hall. The procession will take place at 8:30 a.m. on January 29.
