Country artist Han Myeong-sook dies at 90

SEOUL, Jan. 22 (Yonhap) -- Han Myeong-sook, a South Korean country music artist from the 1960s, died of a long-term illness Wednesday, according to people close to the singer and her family. She was 90.

Han, best known for her 1961 megahit "The Man in the Yellow Shirt," began singing in 1952 as a member of a musical troupe and had performed at the U.S. Eighth Army.

The song became highly popular because it was much different from the trot genre that had been the mainstream music of the time.

It was later covered by foreign artists, including French singer Yvette Giraud, and became a crossover hit.

Her rise to stardom led to the production of a film with a similar title, in which Han played the lead role.

She is survived by a daughter and a son.
