Police panel recommends prosecutorial referral for DP lawmaker on alleged sexual harassment

SEOUL, March 19 (Yonhap) -- A police committee recommended Thursday that Rep. Jang Kyung-tae of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) be referred to prosecutors over allegations that he sexually harassed a female aide.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's investigation deliberation committee comprised of police officers and external experts, such as lawyers and university professors, made the decision, according to sources.

The committee conducted separate interviews with Jang and the accuser's lawyer before reaching the conclusion through internal deliberation.

Jang is accused of sexually harassing a female aide during a staff drinking gathering at a restaurant in October 2023. Authorities said Jang is also accused of inflicting "secondary harm," including exposing the victim's identity.

The committee evaluates the completeness and fairness of police investigations and can order a reinvestigation or additional inquiry if involved parties contest the findings. It was convened at the request of Jang.

In January, police summoned him for questioning and have since said they would soon decide whether to formally refer the case to prosecutors.
