Lee appoints special counsel for follow-up probe into ex-President Yoon, his wife
By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung has appointed a special counsel to lead investigations into allegations that were not addressed in three previous special counsel probes involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, Cheong Wa Dae said Thursday.
Lee appointed Kwon Chang-young, an adjunct professor at the Seoul National University School of Law and an attorney at law firm Jipyong, accepting a recommendation by the minor Rebuilding Korea Party.
Kwon previously served as a judge in a number of district courts and a senior member of the Supreme Court's Judicial Research and Training Institute.
The ruling Democratic Party led the passage of the bill calling for a comprehensive special counsel investigation that combines three separate probes into Yoon's brief imposition of martial law in December 2024, allegations involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee and the death of a young Marine.
Kwon's team will be tasked with looking into allegations that were not examined in earlier investigations, including claims of election interference and other influence-peddling accusations involving Yoon and his wife.
The special counsel is authorized to conduct the investigation for up to 170 days if the probe is extended twice.
