S. Korea calls on N. Korea to give prior notice before cross-border dam discharge

SEOUL, June 27 (Yonhap) -- The unification ministry on Friday called on North Korea to provide prior notice before releasing water from a dam across the border, after the North's unannounced monsoon-season discharges raised safety concerns for residents in South Korea's border areas.

"(We) request that North Korea give advance notice when discharging water from the dam, for humanitarian purposes, to prevent flooding in border areas during the monsoon season," Chang Yoon-jeong, a unification deputy spokesperson, said at a press briefing.

Chang cited the protection of lives and safety of South Korean residents in border areas as the reason for the call, adding the Lee Jae Myung government considers it the country's most important duty.
