(LEAD) N. Korean crossed land border Thursday night: S. Korean military

(ATTN: UPDATES throughout with details)

SEOUL, July 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's military said Friday it has taken into custody a North Korean individual who crossed the inter-Korean land border the previous day.

The individual crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the midwestern part of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Thursday night, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

Relevant authorities plan to conduct a joint investigation into the individual, it said, noting it has yet to detect any unusual North Korean military activity.

"The military identified the individual in question in the MDL area ... and conducted a normal operation to guide (the individual) and secured them," the JCS said in a text message to reporters.

It did not provide further details of the individual, including the motive behind the crossing.

The two Koreas are separated by the DMZ -- a 4-kilometer wide buffer zone, which is heavily fortified on both sides.
