SEOUL, July 7 (Yonhap) -- The National Assembly will hold a confirmation hearing for Foreign Minister nominee Cho Hyun on July 17, officials said Monday.

Another confirmation hearing for Unification Minister nominee Chung Dong-young will be held on July 14. Cabinet appointments are subject to parliamentary hearings but do not need approval to take posts.

The ruling and opposition parties agreed to continue discussions before the hearings as they still remain divided on the list of witnesses to summon.

Cho is a retired veteran diplomat who served as both the first and second vice ministers between 2017 and 2019 under the liberal government of former President Moon Jae-in.

Chung, a journalist-turned-veteran lawmaker, previously served as the unification minister under the Roh Moo-hyun government from 2004-05.

He spearheaded the now-suspended joint industrial complex project with North Korea in the North Korean border city of Kaesong and was dispatched as a special envoy to Pyongyang for a one-on-one meeting with then North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

A confirmation hearing for Bae Kyung-hoon, former head of LG AI Research who was named minister for science and ICT, will be held on July 14.

The Assembly will also hold a confirmation hearing for Industry Minister nominee Kim Jung-kwan on July 17.

Kim served as a president in charge of marketing at Doosan Enerbility Co., a major Korean power equipment builder, before he was tapped as the Lee Jae Myung administration's first industry minister.
