Digital memorial stones for Korean War veterans installed at Yonsei University

SEOUL, July 22 (Yonhap) -- Digital memorial stones displaying the names of Korean War veterans have been installed at Yonsei University in Seoul as part of a government project honoring national heroes, the veterans ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry is set to unveil the installation at a library of Yonsei University on Wednesday, with Veterans Minister Kang Jung-ai, Yonsei President Yoon Dong-Sup, Korean War veterans and others in attendance.

Yonsei is the first university to open such an installation under the ministry's project to place digital memorial stones for Korean War veterans on school campuses.

The digital installations at Yonsei will display the illuminated names of the 1,363 graduates who served during the 1950-53 Korean War, including Hyun Bong-hak, who helped evacuate tens of thousands of war refugees to safety.

QR codes attached to each digital plaque provide personal information about the veterans, including their military ranks, service periods and the years they entered the university, the ministry said.

"It is meaningful that the memorial stone installation honoring national heroes (at Yonsei) is the first of its kind among the universities that sent students to the Korean War," Kang said.

The ministry plans to expand the project to other schools whose students served in the war, including Chosun University and Yeosu High School.
