Talks on next year's minimum wage

A notice hung at an employment agency under the labor ministry in Seoul on May 1, 2023, informs visitors that this year's minimum hourly wage is set at 9,620 won (around US$7.18), one day before the Minimum Wage Commission holds the commission's first plenary session, with the two biggest umbrella labor unions launching a campaign to achieve a 25 percent increase in the hourly minimum wage to 12,000 won. The 27-member commission, comprising nine each from three sides -- employers, employees and those representing social interests -- annually holds plenary meetings around this time to decide the following year's minimum wage.
