S. Korea, U.S. hold 2nd consultations on Seoul's UNSC seat preparations

SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States held consultations to discuss Seoul's upcoming role as a nonpermanent member of the U.N. Security Council (UNSC), the foreign ministry said Friday.

Thursday's meeting -- the second in a month -- came as South Korea prepares to assume a two-year term as a nonpermanent UNSC member in 2024-25. It is the third time for South Korea to serve on the council as one of 10 nonpermanent members.

At the meeting held in Washington, Kweon Ki-hwan, the deputy foreign minister for multilateral and global affairs, and Michele Sison, U.S. assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs, exchanged the priorities of their agendas at the UNSC.

The two sides also shared their views on the current regional issues, including on North Korea and the Middle East, as well as U.N. peacekeeping operations and cybersecurity, the ministry said.

The U.S. side shared its experiences as one of the five permanent members of the UNSC and agreed to support Seoul during its term, it added.

In late October, South Korea and the U.S. held a working-level meeting on Seoul's role as a nonpermanent UNSC member. South Korea also had two similar meetings with Britain and France last month, respectively.
