NewJeans-court ruling
NewJeans (NJZ) defies court's injunction, vows to take legal action
SEOUL, March 21 (Yonhap) -- K-pop girl group NewJeans said Friday it will take legal action against a court ruling that granted an injunction to prohibit the group's independent activities.
Earlier in the day, the Seoul Central District Court accepted the injunction sought by the group's agency, ADOR, to prevent the five members from independently signing advertising contracts and pursuing separate music activities, as part of an ongoing legal dispute between the two parties.
Also the court granted ADOR's request to retain the official representation of the group, saying that it was difficult to conclude ADOR had violated contractual agreements with the members.
"While we respect the court's ruling, it is the result of inadequate consideration of the fact that the trust between the two parties has completely broken down," the group said on its social media.
The group plans to challenge the decision through a legal objection procedure and to submit additional evidence to strengthen its case.
"We believe it is only a matter of time before the truth comes out," it said, emphasizing it won't return to ADOR.
NewJeans, which rebranded as NJZ last month, began pursuing independent activities after accusing ADOR in November of violating the terms of their exclusive contract. But ADOR claims that the contract remains valid until July 2029.
The group is set to perform at a sold-out concert in Hong Kong on Sunday, where the five-member act was expected to release a new song.
"We have decided to go ahead with the concert for our fans who are looking forward to our performance and to avoid causing any harm to the organizers," the group said.
